When do patients need bone grafting procedures? It really depends on what they are presenting with. For example, the purpose of a bone graft is that if the patient does need a tooth that needs to be extracted and a future implant needs to be replaced, normally what we would like to do is remove the tooth at that time. We will actually preserve the socket where the tooth used to be, and we add bone graft into it. That way, in about three to four months later, that socket is filled with mature vital bone that we can utilize for placement of an implant. That's really the essential part of a bone grafting process, that we get to preserve the patient's own natural bone as best as possible. Preserving the bone helps us actually gives us the opportunity to place implants in the future if need be. If patient does not wish to have a future implant, then usually we do not use a bone grafting procedure.
